As you turn the needlebook right side out, avoid the temptation to grab
the tassel and pull it. You could pull it out of the needlebook, which would
not be a good thing. Be careful not to grab the silk print or the silk ribbon
embellishment. Try to hold the seams and seam allowances between your fingers,
and to push instead of pull as you turn the needlebook inside out so as
not to disturb the more delicate parts. You may choose use the larger, rounded
end of a point turner to smooth the edges, but you can also gently pull
the piping to pull the edges of the needlebook out flat.
Insert the batting. The flat end of a chopstick may help to position
the batting. Also, the opening is large enough that you can insert your
fingers to make sure that the batting is lying flat, with no wrinkles.
Fluff the needlebook in your hands and coax it into shape. Close and
open it a few times, and use your touch to ensure that all the "innards"
are in their places, and that there are no lumps. This also ensures that
you have not left anything inside that should not be there. :-)
Check the tassel. It should swing freely and be securely attached. Check
the button loop. It should be securely attached.
When you are sure that everything is in place, use a "float stitch"
to close the opening. A float stitch is made by bringing the thread up on
the needlebook and then catching only one thread just inside the fold on
the opposite piece. Then take a stitch through one thread on the needlebook,
and pull the thread up. Take another stitch through one thread on just inside
the fold on the opposite piece, and continue like this until the opening
is closed. Taking the stitches just inside the fold will hide your thread,
and the closing will be invisible. I find that this works much better than
whip stitches, and is a very strong stitch.
Fold the needlebook pages to one side, and then fold the needlebook in
half. You will notice some fullness at each side of the fold. Just give
each fold a good pinch between your fingers, and this will flatten the bulk. |
