Create the pockets by placing the pocket pieces over the inside needlebook
pieces. Determine the center of each inside piece by folding in half and
marking with a pin. Once the pocket piece or lace is positioned, make a
line of machine or hand stitching vertically on the pocket. If you are stitching
by machine, be sure to leave long thread tails at the beginning of your
stitching so that when you are finished, you can thread the tails through
a needle and take them to the back of your pockets. Tie in a square knot
and trim. This will give a very clean finish to your pockets, with no tiny
thread tails showing.
There are now two large pockets. You can create additional pockets by
dividing each of the large pockets in half, and making a line of vertical
stitching by machine or by hand. When you are measuring, be sure to exclude
the ½" seam allowance at the sides, or your pockets will not
be of equal size once the needlebook is finished.
You may also wish to leave two large pockets on one side of the needlebook,
and create four pockets on the other side, to allow for items of various
sizes.
The sample shown was marked with chalk at the center, and then at the
half-way point between the center and the stitching line. Then hand stitching
with matching embroidery floss was used to stitch the pockets.
Being creative with your inside pockets is a good thing. You may even
want to make them out of three different coordinating fabrics, and use beading
to sew the pocket divisions. |
