Pansy Fan Needlebook Instructions - Step 8

Embellish the Pansy Fan silk print by making ribbon pansies over the pansies in the print. Note: There are various methods for making pansies. The pansies in this project were made with 7mm ribbon. Each petal was made with two straight stitches, allowing the ribbon to puff slightly. You may choose to make two layers of two straight stitches for each petal, for maximum loft. In fact, a less expensive plain ribbon can be used for the first set of two stitches, followed by your favorite hand dyed ribbon over the top. If one of your straight stitches isn't perfect, just make another one over the top. Any extra loft in the stitches will add to the beauty of the pansies.

You will notice that some of the pansies on the print are rather large. It isn't necessary to follow the print exactly, trying to make silk ribbon pansies with long petals. Use your judgment and cover the large printed pansies with more than one pansy, or with one pansy and some buds. You can cover as much or as little of the printed pattern as you like. It is fine to only make some pansies, leaving the pansies in the printed pattern to show through. Likewise, you may choose to use one color theme for you pansies, which is very lovely.

 Before and After

Note that there is only one bud in the print. You may choose to add more buds to your design. The buds in the sample were made with a small amount of gathered 7mm ribbon--approximately 1-1/2" - 2". Then three straight stitches were added at the base of the bud, and floss was used to embroider the stem.
